لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ
The town where you live.

وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ
The begetting and the begotten.

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ
We created the human being to work hard (to redeem himself).*

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَنَ فِي كَبَدٍ
Does he think that no one will ever call him to account?

أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ
He boasts, "I spent so much money!"

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا
Does he think that no one sees him?

أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ
A tongue and two lips?

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
Did we not show him the two paths?

وَهَدَيْنَهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ
He should choose the difficult path.

فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ
Which one is the difficult path?

وَمَا أَدْرَكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ
The freeing of slaves.

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
Feeding, during the time of hardship.

أَوْ إِطْعَمٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ
Or the poor who is in need.

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
And being one of those who believe, and exhorting one another to be steadfast, and exhorting one another to be kind.

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنْ الَّذِينَ ءامَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ
These have deserved happiness.

أُوْلَئِكَ أَصْحَبُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِءايَتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَبُ الْمَشْءمَةِ
They will be confined in the Hellfire.
